The Road to the Cross: He Paved the Way
There are moments in life when everything feels uncertain—when things don’t turn out the way we expected, and we’re left trying to make sense of it all. In those moments, we long for comfort, reassurance, and hope.
What’s incredible is that as Jesus walked toward the cross—fully aware of the betrayal, suffering, and death ahead—He chose not to focus on His own pain. Instead, Jesus comforts us in suffering, just as He comforted His disciples.
And through it all, He was paving the way for us.
A Love That Looks Beyond Its Own Pain
As Jesus sat with His disciples before His crucifixion, He spoke words not of fear, but of peace:
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.” — John 14:1 (NIV)
Jesus knew what was coming. He knew the weight of the cross. Yet He gently reassured His disciples, who were confused, afraid, and uncertain.
This is the kind of love Jesus has for us.
He sees your fear. He understands your questions. And instead of stepping back, He draws closer with comfort.
Even in His own suffering, His heart was set on you.
He Paved the Way When We Could Not
The disciples expected something different. They didn’t expect suffering. They didn’t expect things to unfold this way.
But Jesus gently revealed a deeper truth:
“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” — John 14:6 (NIV)
What looked like loss was actually love in motion.
Through the cross, Jesus was making a way where there was none—a direct path to the Father. His sacrifice removed the separation we could never overcome on our own.
When life feels confusing or painful, it doesn’t mean God is absent. Sometimes, it means He is working in ways we can’t yet see—just as He was on the road to the cross.
Jesus Comforts Us in Suffering Today
Jesus didn’t just comfort His disciples then—He still comforts us now.
“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” — Matthew 28:20 (NIV)
When your plans fall apart…When your heart feels heavy…When you don’t understand what God is doing…
He is still with you.
He is still present.
He is still guiding.
He is still reminding you that this is not the end of your story.
What This Means for You
Because Jesus paved the way, you are never without hope.
You have:
Direct access to the Father
A Savior who understands suffering
A God who meets you in your uncertainty
And a love that does not leave when life gets hard.
Jesus didn’t wait for everything to make sense before offering comfort. He offered it right in the middle of the unknown.
And He offers that same comfort to you today.

Where in your life do things feel unclear or disappointing right now?
How might Jesus be inviting you to trust Him, even before you understand?
Let His words rest on your heart: “Do not let your hearts be troubled.”
Encouragement
As we walk The Road to the Cross, we’re reminded of something deeply personal:
Jesus comforts us in suffering—and He paved the way for us to come to the Father.
He sees you.
He is near to you.
And His love is still holding you, even in the middle of uncertainty.
Because of Jesus, there is always hope.
Closing Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for loving me even when I don’t understand what You’re doing. Thank You for never leaving me in the unknown, but walking with me through it. Thank You for paving the way for me to come to the Father — a way I could never make on my own.
Help me to trust You when the path feels uncertain. When fear rises and I am tempted to take control, remind me that You are already ahead of me, preparing the way. Give me peace in the waiting and confidence in Your perfect plan.
Teach me to rest in Your presence, not in my understanding. Strengthen my faith so that I may follow You even when I cannot see clearly. Let my heart be anchored in Your love, knowing that You are good, You are faithful, and You are always leading me home.
