Jesus chose the hard road to the cross
Jesus walked the road of suffering so we could walk the road of salvation.

The Road to the Cross: Introduction

There are moments in life when we face difficult paths—choices that require sacrifice, courage, or surrender. Sometimes the road God places before us feels heavier than we expected.

When we read the story of Jesus leading up to the crucifixion, we see something powerful:

Jesus knowingly walked the hardest road imaginable.

The road to the cross was not an accident. It was a choice made out of love.

And understanding that truth changes how we see both His sacrifice and our own journey of faith.

Jesus Knew What Was Ahead

Long before the crucifixion happened, Jesus spoke openly about what was coming. He knew suffering, rejection, and death were waiting for Him in Jerusalem.

Scripture tells us:

“As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.” — Luke 9:51

That phrase is powerful. Jesus “set out.”

He intentionally moved toward the place where the cross awaited Him.

He could have turned away.

He could have avoided the suffering.

But He didn’t.

Jesus walked forward because His mission was to rescue us.

The Weight of the Garden

One of the most honest and moving moments before the cross happens in the Garden of Gethsemane.

There, Jesus prayed with deep anguish, knowing what was about to happen.

“My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” — Matthew 26:39

In this moment we see both His humanity and His obedience.

Jesus felt the weight of what was coming.

The suffering was real.

The pain would be real.

Yet even in that moment, He surrendered fully to the Father’s will.

This prayer reveals something deeply comforting: Jesus understands what it feels like to face hard things.

He knows what it means to surrender when the road ahead feels overwhelming.

Love Chose the Cross

Sometimes we picture the crucifixion as something that simply happened to Jesus. But Scripture shows us something different.

Jesus chose this path.

Hebrews reminds us why:

“For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame.” — Hebrews 12:2

What was that joy?

It was the restoration of humanity.

It was for our forgiveness - the forgiveness of sins.

It was the chance for us to be brought back into relationship with God.

We were the reason He endured the cross.

The road to the cross was a road of love.

What This Means for Us Today

Many people walk through seasons where following God feels difficult.

Sometimes obedience means trusting Him when we don’t understand the outcome.

Sometimes it means surrendering fears, plans, or control.

When those moments come, we can remember something powerful:

Jesus walked the hard road first.

He understands struggle.

He understands surrender.

And He promises to walk with us through whatever we face.

Because of His love, we are never walking alone.

When the Road Feels Hard

There are seasons in life when the road ahead feels heavy.

Maybe you're carrying burdens no one else can see.

Maybe you're walking through uncertainty, loss, disappointment, or a situation you never expected to face.

In those moments it can feel lonely and overwhelming.

But the story of Jesus walking the road to the cross reminds us of something deeply comforting: our Savior understands difficult roads.

He knows what it means to feel the weight of suffering.

He knows what it means to surrender when the path ahead is painful.

And because of that, we can trust that He walks with us today.

If your journey feels hard right now, take heart. The same love that carried Jesus to the cross is the love that surrounds you today. He sees you, He cares for you, and He has not abandoned you.

Sometimes we may not understand the road we’re on—but we can trust the One who walks it with us.

Reflection

Take a moment to reflect on these questions:

  • Is there an area of your life where God is inviting you to trust Him more deeply?

  • How does knowing that Jesus willingly walked the road to the cross change the way you see His love for you?

The road Jesus walked was painful—but it was also purposeful.

And in the next part of this series, we’ll look more closely at the incredible sacrifice Jesus made when He gave His life on the cross for us.

Closing Prayer

Jesus,

Thank You for loving us enough to walk the road to the cross. Thank You for choosing obedience even when it meant suffering. Help us trust You when the path before us feels difficult. Remind us that Your love is always with us and that we never walk alone. Amen.
