Introduction

Jesus calls us the salt and the light of the world.

This is not a suggestion. It is a declaration.

With these words, Jesus reveals something profound about who we are and why we were created. We are not accidents. We are not meant to blend into the background or live without purpose. We were created for good — and for God’s glory.

In a world often marked by darkness, decay, and confusion, Jesus places incredible value on each of us. He tells us that our lives matter, that our presence makes a difference, and that God desires to work through us to reflect His goodness to the world.

Salt and Light: Our Identity and Calling

Before Jesus explains what it means to be salt and light, He clearly states who we are and why we matter:

Matthew 5:13–16

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

These words are not a challenge to become something we are not — they are a reminder of who we already are in Christ. Jesus doesn’t say “try to be” salt and light. He says “you are.”

Our calling flows from our identity. We shine not for our own recognition, but so that God is glorified. Our lives are meant to point beyond ourselves — toward the goodness and grace of the Father.

Salt: Preserving What Is Good

Salt was incredibly valuable in Jesus’ time. It preserved food, enhanced flavor, and prevented decay. When Jesus calls us salt, He is saying that our lives are meant to preserve what is good in a broken world.

As followers of Christ, we are called to:

  • Stand for truth when compromise is easy

  • Ask for and bring wisdom where there is confusion

  • Reflect God’s goodness through integrity and love

But Jesus also warns that salt can lose its saltiness. When we drift from God, hide our faith, or conform to the world’s values, we lose the distinctiveness that makes our witness powerful. More so, we start to lose our true identity and start to conform to what the world tells us to be - not who we are.

Salt does not exist for itself — it exists to serve. In the same way, our faith is meant to be lived out, not hidden away.

Light: Shining in the Darkness

Light does one thing unmistakably well — it shines.

Even the smallest light changes the darkness around it.

Jesus reminds us that light is not meant to be hidden. It is meant to be seen — not for our recognition, but so that others may see God’s goodness through us.

Being light doesn’t mean being perfect.

  • It means being present.

  • It means loving when it’s hard.

  • It means choosing mercy over judgment.

  • It means pointing people toward hope when the world offers despair.

Light reveals the path forward — and Jesus calls us to reflect His light in a world that desperately needs it.

Created for God’s Glory

Jesus’ words make something clear:

We were never meant to live small, silent, or self-focused lives. We were created to reflect God’s character — His love, His truth, and His grace.

When we live as salt and light, God is glorified not through grand gestures, but through everyday faithfulness.

  • Our words matter.

  • Our actions matter.

  • Our obedience matters.

And God uses even the smallest acts of faith to bring light into dark places.

A Prayer for Faithful Living

Jesus, thank You for calling us salt and light. Thank You for giving our lives purpose and meaning beyond ourselves. Help us to live in a way that reflects Your goodness and brings glory to God. When we are tempted to hide, give us courage. When we feel small, remind us that You can use even the smallest light to change the darkness. We pray that you can use our lives for Your glory. Jesus in Your heavenly name, Amen.

Encouragement

You were created on purpose — for a purpose.

Even when you feel unnoticed, God sees you.

Even when your faith feels small, God can use it.

Even when the world feels dark, your light still shines.

Live boldly.

Love generously.

Stay close to Jesus.

Because when you do, the world sees more than just you —it sees God’s glory shining through you.
