Growing from a heart rooted in Christ
Authentic faith is revealed not by what we say, but by the life that grows from a heart rooted in Christ.

Introduction

The world tells us many things about who we should be.

“Be true to yourself.”

“Be the best version of you.”

At first glance, these phrases sound empowering. But often they lead us into something else entirely. Instead of being authentic, we begin projecting what we think the world expects from us. We curate our image. We protect our reputation. We hide the parts of ourselves that feel vulnerable or imperfect.

I will admit that I have spent far too much time worrying about the image I project instead of focusing on my heart. At times, I have even treated my relationship with Jesus the same way — trying to project what I hope will please Him.

But here is the truth:

Jesus already knows me.

And He already loves me.

And the same is true for you.

He already knows you — every strength, every weakness, every mistake — and He already loves you completely.

Authentic Faith: By Their Fruits

As Jesus concludes the Sermon on the Mount, He teaches us about false prophets.

Matthew 7:15-20

Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

Jesus tells us that false prophets may appear harmless — even convincing. But beneath the surface, they are dangerous. He describes them as ferocious wolves in sheep’s clothing.

So how do we recognize them?

Jesus gives a simple answer: look at their fruit.

Fruit represents actions. It reflects what grows from a person’s heart. Words can be polished. Appearances can be managed. But actions eventually reveal truth.

False prophecy often reveals itself through self-promotion, power, wealth, and status. In a world that constantly asks you to prove your value through success, influence, popularity, or wealth — Jesus reminds us that these are not the measures of God’s Kingdom.

When faith becomes a tool to elevate status instead of serve others, something has gone wrong.

Authentic faith produces humility, compassion, generosity, and love.

Authentic Faith: The Will of the Father

Jesus continues this by addressing false discipleship.

Matthew 7:21-23

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

Not everyone who claims faith is truly living in alignment with God’s will. Jesus warns that some will do impressive works in His name — yet their hearts remain disconnected from Him.

This is a sobering reminder.

Faith cannot be reduced to outward performance. It is not about appearing righteous or spiritual. Discipleship without God becomes hollow — even dangerous.

Sometimes generosity, leadership, or ministry can be used to elevate personal status, gain influence, or build reputation. When faith becomes self-serving, it loses its foundation.

You may notice a theme emerging in Jesus’ teaching: when our actions are disconnected from God, they become distorted.

Authentic faith begins in the heart — in humility, surrender, and trust.

The Wise and Foolish Builders

Jesus closes the Sermon on the Mount with a powerful image.

Two builders construct houses.

One builds on sand.

The other builds on rock.

Matthew 7:24-27

Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.

When storms come — and storms always come — the house built on sand collapses. But the house built on rock stands firm.

Jesus is the foundation.

When we build our lives on reputation, wealth, influence, or image, the storms of life eventually expose how fragile those things are. But when we build our lives on Christ, we find something unshakable.

Authentic faith is not about perfection. It is about building our lives on the right foundation.

Jesus calls us into action — not to elevate ourselves, but to serve in His Kingdom. Even small acts of faithfulness can have profound impact when they are done prayerfully and in His name.

A Prayer for Authentic Faith

Lord Jesus, You know me completely — my strengths, my weaknesses, my fears, and my failures. Thank You for loving me fully despite them all. Help me to stop performing and start trusting. Shape my heart so that my faith is genuine and rooted in You. Let my actions reflect Your love and humility. Build my life on the solid foundation of Your truth. Amen.

Encouragement

Jesus already knows you.

He knows the parts of you that you celebrate — and the parts you wish you could hide. And yet His love for you remains unchanged.

Authentic faith does not require you to become someone else. It invites you to surrender to the One who created you.

Jesus sees you.

He loves you.

He values you more than you can comprehend.

He does not ask you to build your life alone.

He simply asks you to trust Him — the One who will never leave you, never abandon you, and never stop pursuing you.

Build your life on Him.
